Fairhope was founded by the Fairhope Industrial Association in 1894 as a single tax colony. The idea of the city was to completely eliminate all disincentives for productive use of land, which would in turn retain the value of the land for the community. The purpose of the city ultimately failed miserably, though the city, after switching to a model that most other American cities operate on, continues to operate today.
