It is currently the principal city of the Bogalusa Micropolitan Statistical Area, which currently includes all of Washington Parish, and it is also a part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Bogalusa Combined Statistical Area.

Bogalusa was founded in 1906 by a small timber company; it was designed to house the many workers in the area, and though the mill ended up closing in 1938 the city continued to grow. It was incorporated as a city in 1914 and at one point the city had over 30,000 residents.
